Adopt a Sheep

This is your opportunity to adopt a sheep, which will live and be fed on the farm Sandfellshaga II in Öxarfjörður. The agreement is between you the owner and the farmers of the sheep. The sheep will be there for the rest of its life or until the contract is cancelled.

 

Agreement:

  • The sheep is cared for by the farmers in Sandfellshaga II, with the rest of their flock, fed there during the winter and spends it´s summers grazing on the mountains above the farm.
  • A tracking device is on the sheep all summer so the owner can track its movements.
  • News about the sheep is sent to the owner at least five times a year by e-mail and includes pictures. In March, an image of the fetus(es) seen during the scanning. In May, a picture of it´s lamb/lambs, along with where possible, a picture of the birth. In the autumn, a picture of the sheep with its lambs. In November, a picture is sent when the sheep is shorn. Then a picture of the ram that the ewe is put with, so that the owner can see who is the father of the lambs is.
  • A joint decision is made in the autumn regarding the lamb/lambs. Will they be sold, kept to breed, butchered? (The farmer owns the sheep and the tenant rents it?)

 

Available options (please enquire for costs):

  • Each sheep produces approx. 1.5 kg of wool. it is possible to receive the unwashed fleece or have this processed into yarn in the wool mill in Gilhaga. It is also an option to have the wool processed and knitted into a garment.
  • It is possible to visit your sheep at the farm in consultation with the farmers. Accommodation is available nearby.
  • Summer visit to the area where your sheep is located, using the location device to track it.
  • To participate in the autumn work in consultation with farmers. Accommodation is available nearby.
  • If you choose to have you lamb/lambs slaughtered, you can have the meat processed in Fjallalamb in Kópasker.

 

Pictures of the sheep that are available for adoption are displayed on the homepage. When a sheep has been adopted, the identity of the owner is displayed, but all other communications are made directly with the farmers in Sandfellshaga II.
